You've Got Mail

I had a writing deadline to beat, and I needed a serene place to get inspired. My mind had been wandering for a couple of days, preoccupied with mundane things, so on a sunny Saturday, I decided to take a long drive to my go-to place—a 45-minute drive from the city, far from the hustle and bustle.

As usual, when I arrived, I had the entire place to myself. There was the mesmerizing view of the mountains and the sea, with the gentle sound of the river nearby. A nature-and-work trip, indeed.

Time passed quickly. I was so engrossed in my work that it felt like I was on a date with my laptop the whole time. I had intentionally turned off my phone so I wouldn’t be distracted and could focus on finishing my writing assignment that day.

Then, in the middle of that quiet afternoon, a notification suddenly popped up on my laptop screen: “New Mail.”

I stopped what I was doing and peeked into my inbox.

It was from the Buglas Writers Guild, and honestly, it made me kilig. The email was an invitation to the 6200 Bookfest in Dumaguete, primarily sponsored by the National Book Development Board (NBDB).

I received that email on May 16. Fast-forward to July 17–19, 2026, and there I was, presenting my books, Tiny Hands, Growing Faith and My Dreambook, at the very event mentioned in that email.

It was an unforgettable experience.

I was with my daughter and my mom, and having them there meant so much to me. Their presence and quiet support were more than enough.

I am also deeply grateful to the people who opened doors and created opportunities for me to share my stories and extend the love and joy behind my books—without me even asking.

And as an unexpected bonus, I was given the opportunity to be part of the Focus Group Discussion on the revision of the Implementing Rules and Regulations on NBDB Registration, as well as Tigom: A Stakeholders Summit for Dumaguete, UNESCO Creative City of Literature.

Looking back, I’m simply thankful to have been part of something so meaningful.

There’s something refreshing about being around people who genuinely love what they do and are generous enough to share their time, skills, and knowledge. That kind of passion is contagious.

And sometimes, a simple notification on a quiet afternoon can open the door to an unexpected and meaningful journey.

“You’ve Got Mail.”

A small message, arriving at just the right moment, can sometimes lead to something far greater than you imagined.
